One essential (and sometimes underestimated) ingredient of social-emotional wellbeing is FUN. 🥳 At URSTRONG, we often say we use kids’ language for kids’ problems. The word fun resonates instantly with children, but behind that simple word is some powerful science.
Research in Positive Psychology shows that positive emotions help broaden thinking, build resilience, and strengthen relationships (Fredrickson). States of play, creativity, and flow – when children are fully engaged and absorbed – support learning, motivation, and confidence (Csikszentmihalyi). When something is fun, it’s more memorable, more enjoyable, and more meaningful. Fun is play and it activates the brain’s reward system, releasing feel-good chemicals like serotonin, which support mood, connection, and learning.
In other words, FUN isn’t fluff. Fun helps children feel safe, connected, and motivated. It brings meaning and purpose to learning, and it creates the conditions where friendships can grow.
That’s why, as students return to school this month, URSTRONG Schools are focusing on reconnecting, making new friends, and having fun together with one of our favourite activities: FRIENDSHIP BINGO – a playful, purposeful way for students to build High-Quality Connections through shared positive experiences.
